2012 APA's Annual Meeting Special Edition
Expert Delivers Blunt Advice for Treating Sexual Minority Youth

John Sargent“The two best antidepressants [for depressed sexual minority teens] are connections and competence,” said John Sargent, M.D., director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine. “I try to help the youngster feel confident even if the youngster doesn’t feel like being confident—so it’s a matter of faking it until you make it. Then you use the confidence to help the youngster feel better about himself or herself.”

Sargent spoke at APA’s 2012 annual meeting in Philadelphia in the workshop “Don’t Label Me: Working With the Sexual Minority Adolescent and Their Families.”

“Parents can and should expect their sexual minority child to be as healthy, successful, and happy as any other child,” Sargent said. Sargent was joined by Cecil Webster, M.D., Ayesha Mian, M.D., and Pedro Bustamante, M.D.
