Kernberg on Treatment of Personality Disorders in Love and Sexuality

Otto KernbergIn this video, Otto Kernberg, M.D., talks about methods that he and his colleagues have developed for treating patients with severe personality disorders: applying a model of contemporary psychoanalytic object relations theory to the study of a number of issues that are important in the evaluation of personalities in areas of conflict in sexuality and love relations, conflicts of couples dealing with tendencies toward aggressive behavior, particularly unconscious self-aggression that often goes hand in hand with the development of intimate relations. Issues such as spirituality and religion are also examined in this psychodynamic treatment of the patient. Discussion of many of these issues can be found in Kernberg’s book, the videoinseparable nature of love and aggression: clinical and theoretical perspectives. Watch the video.
