Daniel Borenstein, M.D., of Los Angeles and Lawrence Stone, M.D., of San Antonio, Tex., have been nominated for the office of president-elect of APA in the Association's 1999 election. Borenstein is currently one of APA's two vice presidents. Stone is the immediate past president of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
The slate of candidates for the 1999 election was chosen by APA's Nominating Committee and received by the Board of Trustees at the APA fall component meetings in Washington, D.C., last month.
Nominated to compete in the race for vice president are Paul Appelbaum, M.D., of Newtonville, Mass., and Jeremy Lazarus, M.D., of Englewood, Colo. Appelbaum is currently APA secretary, and Lazarus is immediate past speaker of the APA Assembly.
For secretary the candidates are Michelle Riba, M.D., of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Chester Schmidt Jr., M.D., of Baltimore. Riba is currently one of APA's three trustees-at-large, and Schmidt is a former Area Trustee.
There will be a three-way race for trsuteee-at-large this year. Richard Balon, M.D., of Troy, Mich., Ezra Griffith, M.D., of New Haven, Conn., and Ann Maloney, M.D., of New York City.
In the other three-way race in the 1999 election, the candidates for the position of member-in-training trustee-elect are Sandra DeJong, M.D., of Needham, Mass., Emine Iscan, M.D., of Boston, and John Webber, M.D., of Little Rock, Ark.
Two Areas will be electing trustees in the 1999 election: 2 and 5. Candidates were nominated by their respective Area councils, and only members residing in these Areas will be able to cast votes.
Competing for the office of Area 2 are incumbent Herbert Peyser, M.D., of New York City and Anthony Villamena, M.D., of Bronxville, N.Y.
The candidates for Area 5 trustee are Jack Bonner, M.D., of Greenville, S.C., and Dudley Stewart, M.D., of New Orleans.
APA voting members may file petitions to place additional candidates on the ballot. Petitions must be received at APA headquarters by Wednesday, October 15. To nominate a candidate by petition, at least 400 signatures of eligible voting members are required, except for the positions of Area trustee and member-in-training trustee-elect, for which 100 signatures each are required.
Petitions for referenda are due October 15. They are required to have the signatures of at least 500 voting members.
Ballots will be mailed to APA voting members on Tuesday, January 5, 1999. The deadline for their return to APA is Friday, February 5.
The ballot for the 1999 election is now being redesigned so that it can be filled out and tabulated more easily by computer. A sample ballot will be published in a future issue, along with instructions on how to fill it out.
