APA Art Association Announces Winners in 1998 Exhibit

Approximately 40 people were willing to put an outer representation of their inner selves on display at the APA Art Association exhibit held in conjunction with APA's 1998 annual meeting in Toronto.

According to Exhibit Coordinator Gail Barton, M.D., the works were in wide-ranging media, including oil, pastel, and water color paintings; linoleum block print and mono print; color and black and white photography; turned wood; basketry; sculptures in bronze, acrylic, and glass; tapestry; bead work; and poetry.

The prize winners were selected by viewers.

Painting

First: Ty Porter, M.D., "Alley Seen." Second: Wilma Rosen, M.D., "Arabella Portrayal." Third: Aydrogan Ugur, M.D, "Peggy's Cove." Honorable mention: William Alvarez, M.D., and Aydrogan Ugur, M.D.

Photography

First and second: Lloyd Frost, M.D., "Family Dynamics" and "Girl From Seville." Tie for third: Edmond Cava, M.D., "Bengal Kittens," Gail Barton, M.D., "Small Town Parade," and Carl Segal, M.D., "Kittens at Play." Honorable mention: Scott Kramer and James Morris Jr., M.D.

Poetry

First: Barbara Kennedy, M.D., "Physician's Creed." Second: William Alvarez, M.D., "Too Sad to Have a Title?" Third: William Alvarez, M.D., "I Don't Care If You Hate This Poem," and Aydrogan Ugur, M.D., "Scarlet the Cat." Honorable mention: Elissa Hoffman, M.D., and Louise Miller.

Sculpture

First: Astric Rusquellas, M.D., "Cala Lily Vendor of Havana" (acrylic). Second: Lynn Kiraly, "Symbiosis" (bronze). Third: Habib Nathan, M.D., "The Great Hug" (glass).

Crafts

First: Eva Ettedgui, M.D., "Solitude" (tapestry). Second and third: Thomas Flanagan, M.D. (turned bowls). Honorable mention: Astrid Rusquellas, M.D. (painted pillow) and Gail Barton, M.D. (basket).

Graphics

First: Wilma Rosen, M.D., "Minnie at 90." Second: Francis Hersey, M.D., "Chapoqnoit Heath." Third: Christine Billroth, "Freedom (cilia and perifrom cells)." Honorable mention: Beverley Hebb Wainberg.

Next year's annual meeting in Washington, D.C., will also feature an art exhibit sponsored by the APA Art Association. That meeting will be held May 15 to 20.
