American Psychoanalytic Association Extends Special Invitation to APA Members
APA members are invited to come to Chicago before the start of APA’s 2000 annual meeting and attend the annual meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA).
A psychoanalytic perspective on a wide range of clinical and societal issues will be the focus of the meeting, which will be held May 10 to 14 at the Palmer House Hilton, 17 East Monroe Street, Chicago. The hotel is conveniently located in the heart of the Loop, Chicago’s central business district.
"APsaA will be offering a number of programs and symposia that might be of particular interest to APA members," said Robert M. Pyles, M.D., president of APsaA. "We hope APA members might consider coming to Chicago early and joining us."
The APsaA program includes clinical workshops in process and technique, one of which focuses on the analytic treatment of incest; a symposium on gay and lesbian parenting; a discussion on the use of computers for psychoanalytic studies; and a symposium on trauma and loss in inner-city children.
In addition, four special programs will be offered geared toward psychiatry residents and psychology and social-work students.
The public is also invited to attend a special forum on youth violence on Friday, May 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Preston Bradley Hall at the Chicago Cultural Center. The forum will be moderated by John Callaway, award-winning former host of PBS’s "Chicago Tonight," and chaired by Mark D. Smaller, Ph.D., a Chicago psychoanalyst. Panelists include Isaiah Anderson, Ph.D., of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; Steven Marans, Ph.D., of the Yale Child Study Center in New Haven, Conn.; and Stuart W. Twemlow, M.D., of the Menninger Foundation and Clinic in Topeka, Kan. This forum is part of a larger conference on youth and violence.
The cosponsors of the forum are DePaul College of Law, the University of Illinois at Chicago, the American Psychoanalytic Association, the American Psychoanalytic Foundation, and the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis.
APsaA is a professional organization of psychoanalysts throughout the United States. The association is composed of affiliate societies and training institutes in many cities and has approximately 3,000 individual members. APsaA is a regional association of the International Psychoanalytical Association.
