New Plenary to Highlight Therapeutic Pipeline

To catch the latest on the hottest new therapies in research and development, be sure to attend the inaugural “Leading with Science: Clinical Trials in 2026 and Beyond” plenary session this morning. The session will feature a curated selection of emerging molecules, pharmacologic agents, and research, all discussed by principal investigators in Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials.

“Psychiatry is in a particularly exciting era of innovation,” Vikas Gupta, M.D., M.P.H., plenary co-moderator and vice chair of APA’s 2026 Annual Meeting Scientific Program Committee, told Psychiatric News. Gupta noted advances across a wide range of therapeutic areas, including orexin receptor agonists that target the sleep-wake system in narcolepsy type 1, psychedelic therapies such as COMP360 psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression, novel strategies aimed at mitigating antipsychotic-associated weight gain, and maintenance treatments that may significantly lower the risk of relapse in schizophrenia.

“Many of these approaches represent meaningful shifts in how we think about psychiatric illness and treatment development,” Gupta said. “I think attendees will come away with a deeper understanding of where psychiatric research is headed and why this may be one of the most transformative periods our field has seen in decades.”

The clinical trials spotlighted in today’s plenary were chosen for a variety of reasons, according to APA Vice President of Education and Deputy Medical Director Vishal Madaan, M.D., including their focus on the extrapolation of long-term research data to real-world practice. “The overall focus is on innovation, longevity, and clinical relevance,” Madaan said.

“It is critical to stay informed about the latest clinical research in the field, including newer molecules, newer indications, as well real-world scientific advances, even more so in this age of misinformation,” Madaan continued. “This is an opportunity to learn from leading physician-academicians and scientists about the latest research and apply the data back home in your clinical practice.”

The presenters from each study will highlight the objectives and hypotheses related to their research, core inclusion and exclusion criteria, key primary and secondary results, and the limitations of each trial. “It is increasingly important for psychiatrists to understand the methodology behind these trials,” Gupta said. “As new and sometimes highly publicized treatments emerge, clinicians need the ability to critically interpret the evidence—including study design, patient experience, long-term outcomes, and real-world applicability. This helps ensure that emerging findings are translated thoughtfully and responsibly into patient care.”

The plenary will conclude with a discussion moderated by APA Scientific Program Committee leaders, including Gupta, John Luo, M.D., and Sofia Matta, M.D. ■
